Spirit Airlines Shuts Down After Fuel Costs Double, Bailout Fails

For 34 years, Spirit Airlines was the face of budget travel in America. This weekend, it all came to an end.
What Happened?
- Spirit Airlines stopped flying on May 2, 2026. All 4,119 scheduled flights were canceled.
- The airline had filed for bankruptcy twice since 2024. But the final blow came from jet fuel prices, which doubled from 2.24 to 4.51 per gallon during the Iran conflict.
- A $500 million government bailout fell through. Some creditors opposed the deal. The board couldn’t agree. By early Saturday, Spirit ordered a full shutdown.
- About 17,000 employees lost their jobs.
The announcement came in the middle of the night. By morning, all Spirit flights were canceled. Empty ticket counters greeted travelers at airports across the country with signs telling them not to bother coming to the airport.
Why Did Spirit Shut Down?
Spirit’s restructuring plan assumed fuel would cost about 2.24 per gallon in 2026. By the end of April, the price had surged to about 4.51 per gallon, which is more than double.
CEO Dave Davis said, “The sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the company.”
The airline had tried to merge with JetBlue in 2024, but regulators blocked it. Two bankruptcies followed. The fuel surge was the last straw.
| Category | Year-Over-Year Change (March ’25 vs. March ’26) | Why it matters |
| US domestic airfare | Up 14.9% | Biggest jump in 3 years |
| Average domestic round-trip | $358 (+ $55) | Up 18% year over year |
| International economy | $1,064 (+ $115) | US to anywhere, higher |
| Premium cabins | Up 17% to $1,444 | Still selling strong |
U.S. travel costs overall are 7% higher than this time last year, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data. That’s the largest year‑over‑year increase since March 2023. Airfares are leading the surge, up nearly 15% year over year.

I Have A Spirit Flight. What Do I Do?
Do not go to the airport. Spirit’s ticket counters are closed. Customer service is gone, no phones, no email, no chat. The only official source for updates is spiritrestructuring.com.
Refunds: How Will You Get Your Money Back
If you or someone you know had a Spirit booking, here’s exactly what to do and what not to do:
| You paid with… | What Happens |
| Credit or debit card | Your original card will be automatically refunded, according to Spirit. Please check your statement after a few days. |
| Travel agent or third-party site | To request a refund, you must contact the travel agency in question directly. The spirit world will not assist you with this. |
| Vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points | This is the hard part. The bankruptcy court will decide later how to handle refunds for payments that weren’t made in cash. Sadly, there is no guarantee and no timeline yet. |
One passenger told the BBC she got a notification from Spirit’s app at 2 a.m. and “honestly thought the app was being hacked. “ Others found out when they arrived at the airport for a 5:45 a.m. flight because their email had gone to spam.

Will This Make Flight Prices Higher?
Spirit carried about 1.8% of total U.S. airline capacity. That’s not huge, but in the budget travel market, those seats helped keep prices low.
There would be fewer very cheap seats without Spirit. That means other airlines don’t have to work as hard to keep their base fares as low as possible.
Fares will likely go up more in the next few weeks. If you often fly with low-cost airlines, make your reservations earlier than usual.
What About Other Budget Airlines?
The Association of Value Airlines has asked the Trump administration for a $2.5 billion emergency fund to help other low-cost carriers survive fuel price swings.
No decision has been made yet. But Spirit’s collapse shows that even big-budget airlines are vulnerable when fuel doubles.
