IndiGo Faces Massive Flight Disruptions Across India – What Really Happened?
Last Updated on Dec 10th, 2025 by Neha Sharma, Leave a Comment
An operational crisis has struck IndiGo Airlines – India’s largest airline – following 100 of flight cancellations and delays around India in the past many days. 1000 of passengers were affected by this disruption to air travel between India’s largest cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune & Kolkata.
There were many last minute cancelled bookings, extended airport wait times, missed flight connections & hesitation about receiving refunds or rebookings.
What Caused the IndiGo Crisis?
The main reason behind the mess is the execution of new pilot duty & rest rules by the aviation regulator DGCA. These rules focus on pilot safety and include:
- Mandatory longer rest hours
- Strict limits on night flying
- Weekly flying hour restrictions
IndiGo, which operates a very large number of daily flights, did not have sufficient standby pilots & crew ready to handle these new rules immediately. Because of this shortage of available crew, the airline had no option but to cancel a large number of flights.
Along with this, normal winter operational challenges such as weather conditions, air traffic jam & schedule reshuffling made the situation worse.
How Big Was the Disruption?
- 100s of flights cancelled in a single day at the peak
- More than 1,000+ flights affected within a short period
- Major mess at metro airports
- Many passengers missed important events, business meetings, exams & international connections
- Sudden increase in ticket prices on other airlines due to heavy demand.
Passengers also protested that many cancellations were informed at the last moment, increasing frustration & travel stress.
What IndiGo Is Doing to Fix the Situation?
IndiGo has taken many steps to control the situation –
- Reduced the number of flights on busy routes
- Reworked pilot duty schedules
- Added standby crew
- Started automatic refund processing
- Allowed free rescheduling & date changes
- Slowly restored about 90 to 95% of its flight network
The airline has admitted that planning gaps during the rule transition played a major role in the crisis.
Government & DGCA Action!
The Civil Aviation Ministry & DGCA stepped in immediately & held urgent review meetings with IndiGo officials. Authorities have –
- Controlled the airline to fully stabilise operations.
- Warned airlines not to increase fares unfairly.
- Asked for a detailed report on crew management.
- Indicated that regulatory action may follow if disruptions continue.
What Passengers Should Do Now?
If you are flying with IndiGo in the coming days –
- Always check your flight status before leaving for the airport
- Keep your PNR & booking details ready
- Use official platforms for refunds and rebooking
- Expect possible delays even on active flights
- If travel is urgent also look at substitute airlines
Due to limited seats on other carriers, airfares may stay high on some routes temporarily.
