Why Are Flights Turning Expensive?

Starting from 1st April 2021, the government is increasing the Aviation Security Fee (ASF) that is paid by air passengers for both domestic and international flights. 

That’s because, in the last 1.5 months, jet fuel prices along with the increase in ASF has added more costs, leading to a 30% hike in airfare bands. 

How Much Will The Increase In Airfares Be?

Currently, the government charges INR 160 as Aviation Security Fee for domestic flights and $5.2 for international flights. 

Starting 1st April 2021, the fee is being increased to INR 200 for domestic flights and to $12 for international flights. 

Are There Any Exemptions To Paying Aviation Security Fee?

As per the latest orders from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), there are certain categories that do not have to pay this fee. Those categories are as follows – 

• Children (under age of 2 years)

• Holders of diplomatic passport

• Airline crew on duty, including sky marshals, persons traveling on official duty on aircraft operated by LAF.

• Persons traveling on official duty for United Nations Peace Keeping Missions and transit passengers.

• Passengers departing from any airport due to involuntary re-routing because of technical problems or weather conditions.

Has Aviation Security Fee Increased In The Past?

Yes! In September, last year, the ASF for Domestic passengers increased from INR 150 to INR 160 and from $4.85 to $5.2 for international passengers. 

What Is Aviation Security Fee & Why Is It Required?

Airlines collect the ASF from passengers when they book their tickets. This fee is then paid to the government. Aviation Security Fee is required to pay for the deployment of CISF personnel at the airport and to also fund the safety arrangements at the airports.
