Sometimes air travel is fraught with so many potential hassles: long security lines missed connections, & overcrowded planes. But one of the most common and frustrating issues is lost baggage which can cause a major inconvenience. In addition to the clothes and other belongings you have to replace, you may also have to deal with the hassle of filing a Air France lost and found claim. So what do you do if your luggage goes missing? This blog will explore the Air France baggage claim process in detail, outlining the various tips on how to make the most out of a frustrating situation.

Air France Lost Baggage Policy

Air France is one of the leading airlines in Europe. It offers its passengers a very comprehensive yet simple procedure to follow in case of baggage lost Air France. If you happen to lose your luggage while flying with Air France, there are a few things you need to do in order to make the process as smooth as possible.

You have two options for declaring lost baggage:

  • Online – within 48 hours of arrival, or
  • Notify the Air France baggage customer service Office before departure from the airport

You can choose any option at your convenience and if you want compensation for lost or damaged goods, it is more effective to respond as soon as possible.

Lost Baggage Claim Online

You can file a complaint against your lost baggage online within 48 hours of the arrival of your flight, either through the site or the Air France app by filling out an Air France lost Luggage claim form. You will be given a receipt to track the Baggage in Air France claim status.

Important note – Some airports do not allow you to claim lost luggage online.

Lost Baggage Claim At the airport

If your luggage is lost or has not yet arrived at your destination airport, the best option is to contact the Air France baggage customer service and file a complaint.

Before you leave the airport, you’ll need to fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Once you finish the declaration process, you’ll be given a file number. You can use this number to track the progress of your lost luggage search online.

As per the Montreal Convention, if your baggage is lost by Air France, you are entitled to receive compensation of up to € 1,295.

Air France Baggage Tracking

If you’re wondering where your lost luggage is, you can track it in real-time using the online baggage tracker. All you need is the claim number that was given to you when you reported the lost baggage, either online or at the airport.

Air France Damaged Luggage Policy

Note that, the airline is not responsible for any minor damage that may occur to your luggage during transport, including stretching, marks, or other damage.

Register A Complaint At The Airport

If you are at the airport and your baggage is damaged, you can report it to the Air France baggage office at your arrival airport. They will set up a baggage irregularity report, provide you with the information you need to repair the damage, and give you a claim number. Remember, keep your claim number handy so you can track the progress of your request.

Online Request

You have seven days from the day you receive your item that you can submit a request for compensation for any damages. You can also fill out the request form online or contact customer service in your country.

In order to get a professional estimate for baggage repair or a statement from the repair company indicating that the baggage is beyond repair, you will need to present your boarding pass or ticket, as well as your baggage tag(s).

Important Note: You will need written authorization from Air France before proceeding with any exchanges or repairs. Fees incurred without this authorization will be at your expense. Keep all original documents handy, as you may be asked to submit them.

Air France Missing Item Policy

You notice that an item is missing from your luggage upon arrival at your destination.

Register A Complaint At The Airport

If you notice an item is missing while you are still at the airport, you can report it to the Air France baggage office. They will give you a statement of irregularity and a claim number. Keep your claim number with you so you can track the progress of your compensation request.

Online Request

If you find that something is missing from your baggage when you arrive at your destination, you have seven days to submit a compensation request using the online form. If you submit your request after 7 days, the airline will not be able to compensate you.

Sign the property irregularity report for a lost baggage claim

If you’re still at the airport, you can visit an Air France representative and request the Property Irregularity Report. This is a statement form that must be sent within five days, after which the crew will be able to check the last known location of your luggage and determine where it was lost.

If your luggage is lost or damaged, you will need to complete a Report on Property Irregularities (PIR) at the transit area’s “Baggage Claim” or “Lost Baggage” office. Without a PIR, airports will not accept responsibility for the lost luggage. If the luggage is not found within 21 days of the PIR being filed at the destination airport, Air France will be held liable for the loss. However, if another passenger mistakenly identifies your luggage as their own, Air France cannot be held responsible for any resulting costs.

What are the time limits for receiving lost or damaged luggage compensation?

According to the Montreal Convention, there are time limits for filing claims for lost or damaged baggage.

  • Damaged luggage compensation – You may be eligible for damages if your luggage is lost or damaged. You must file a claim within seven days after receipt of your damaged luggage.
  • Air France delayed baggage compensation will be paid twenty-one days after the date of delivery.
  • Lost luggage compensation – There is no set time limit for making a lost luggage compensation claim, but it is generally advisable to do so as soon as possible after your luggage has gone missing (i.e. within 21 days) or if the airline has acknowledged that they have lost your luggage.

How To Contact Air France Representatives?

For any questions or concerns regarding your lost baggage, you may contact Luggage Service or Customer Support. The time elapsed since you submitted the declaration will determine which department you need to approach.

Within Five Days: If you have any questions within five days of submitting your declaration form, you can speak to the Air France baggage service at your arrival airport.

After Five Days: You can reach out to either the sales representatives in your country of arrival or the customer service team in your country of residence for assistance.
