Heavy Rains Disrupt Mumbai – Schools Closed, Flights Delayed, Roads Flooded!

Mumbai, August 19, 2025 – Mumbai India’s financial capital is facing severe disruption after continuous heavy rainfall lashed the city for over 24 hours. The situation has forced authorities to issue high level alerts, shut down educational institutions, disrupt air travel and halt daily life. Here’s a complete update on what is happening on the ground – 

Massive Rainfall and Weather Alerts!

  • Mumbai, Thane & Raigad districts are under a red alert according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This means these areas are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours.
  • Over 300 mm of rain fell in a 24 hour period in several parts of Mumbai this is causing severe waterlogging & flooding in low lying areas.
  • IMD reports that Santacruz recorded 151.4 mm of rain in just six hours and Vikhroli recorded 255.5 mm.
  • Authorities have advised all the residents to avoid unnecessary travel & warned that the rain is expected to last for the next four days.

Schools, Colleges, and Offices Closed!

  • To ensure the safety of students Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered all schools & colleges in Mumbai and the surrounding areas to close for the day. 
  • Government offices & semi government institutions have also been instructed to close.
  • Private companies have been strongly encouraged to implement work from home policies to prevent employees from becoming stuck in traffic or in areas that are flooded.

Severe Waterlogging and Traffic Jams!

  • There is total flooding on many major roads & highways. The Eastern Freeway Western Express Highway & LBS Marg are the routes that are most severely impacted.
  • Waist deep water has been reported in places like Andheri, Sion, Gandhi Market, Kanjurmarg, Chembur & Navi Mumbai making it impossible for cars to travel.
  • Since the morning there have been reports of severe traffic jams that have left cars stranded for hours.
  • Although the BMC has set up pumping machines in a number of locations & the rapid water clearance is being blocked by the intense rainfall.

Local Trains Disrupted!

  • The local train system is Mumbai’s life line that has been badly damaged. There is a 15 – 20 minute delay in trains on the Central & Western lines.
  • Thousands of passenger were left stranded when the Harbour Line services between Kurla & CSMT were instantly suspended.
  • In Mumbai the Mithi River has risen to a dangerous 3.9 meters prompting authorities to leave over 400 residents from low lying areas like Kurla.
  • To help stranded passengers help desks have been placed at stations such as CSMT, Dadar, Thane, Kalyan, Panvel, Vashi, and Kurla.

Flight Operations Severely Hit!

  1. Air travel has been badly affected at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
  • Over 250 flights were affected including 155 departures & 102 arrivals delayed. Around eight flights were diverted between 9:00 & 9:50 am.
  • The average delay for flights is currently 45 minutes or more.
  1. Airlines like IndiGo, Akasa Air & SpiceJet have issued alerts and requesting passengers to –
  • Check flight status before leaving home.
  • Leave early for the airport as the roads towards the airport are blocked.
  1. Many passengers have said long waiting times inside the airport due to these disruptions.

Casualties and Emergency Situations!

  1. Unfortunately, the heavy rains have also caused loss of lives and damage:
  • One person died in Napean Sea Road when compound wall fall.
  • Another person lost their life in Kanjurmarg due to electrocution caused by waterlogged electrical systems.
  1. The Rayta Bridge on the Kalyan, Murbad, Malshej route (NH-61) has been closed after developing cracks & forced the authorities to block the route for safety.
  2. In Chembur a wall collapsed but no injuries were reported. Quick action by rescue teams was prevented a major tragedy.

The Mumbai Police & BMC have asked residents to stay indoors avoid flood prone areas & keep emergency numbers handy. People are advised not to swim through waterlogged streets or touch electric poles due to the risk of electric shock. Disaster response teams & fire brigades are on high alert & temporary shelters have been set up for those removed from low lying areas. Authorities have also requested citizens to follow official updates & avoid spreading rumors.
